The best and worst brands: how to choose a laptop that does not fail

Any laptop can break, but some manufacturers have better story than others in this regard. An independent and fairly reliable 2012 study is the SquareTrade, a service company guarantees to consumer electronics devices in the US The firm analyzed the ratios of breakdowns laptops for three years. The result is that Asus laptops are those that broke less frequently, followed by Toshiba, Sony and Apple. HP, according to SquareTrade, is the brand whose laptops give worse results. Below are the results. The figures refer to the percentage of failed equipment (on a minimum base of 1,000 units per brand) for a period of three years:

Asus 15.6%

Toshiba 15.7%

Sony: 16.8%

Apple: 17.4%

Dell: 18.3%

Lenovo: 21.5%

Acer: 23.3%

Gateway: 23.5%

HP: 25.6%

Some of these findings may seem surprising. If you purchase based on individual comments from friends and acquaintances, you might think that Apple computers are the ones that give best results, Asus or not so good. It is advisable to look at the statistics in full. These data reflect only one study and it is very likely that if you buy a HP laptop nothing happens, but worth having all available information before deciding. You can see here (PDF) the complete results of study of Square Trade.Choose a manufacturer with good customer

The best and worst brands: how to choose a laptop that does not fail

If you want to buy a laptop that will last several years, also you want to know which company will offer best (and worst) customer. The winner in this category is no surprise. According to the 2012 study by Consumer Reports, for example, Apple received a much higher than their rivals in quality customer, followed by Lenovo and Asus score. The worst of the analyzed? Acer / Gateway (purchased by Taiwan). Below the concrete results (100 is the maximum score):

Apple: 86

Lenovo: 63

Asus: 62

Dell: 60

Toshiba: 59

HP: 58

Acer / Gateway: 51

Sony: No data available

If we combine the failure rates of laptops and customer results, Apple comes out the top of the list, followed by Asus. Unfortunately, there is no comparable data customer care to Sony, so it can not be ruled out as one of the top brands-3/5. However, numbers are not everything. There are always exceptions

The best and worst brands: how to choose a laptop that does not fail

You can look at the statistics all you want, but do not always provide a complete picture of the situation. Sometimes some brands appear all the way down on the list because their teams are really bad; others suffer in the rankings because they sell to user groups with the highest percentage of returns (students, large companies ....). Therefore, it is important not to take up other statistics that you find as absolute truths. They are just one more indicator and there are always exceptions and reasons why a team can leave a manufacturer defective.

There are some tools that help you gather information beyond pure numbers. For example, sites like The Wirecutter made extensive profiles of laptops (and other equipment) based on dozens of variables, each consumer needs, price, features etc. You can also read the reviews of equipment, but by focusing on what matters exactly in that notebook. Instead of looking at just the final score, looking for information to clarify your specific questions about what you want and need in a laptop. For example, if you need a quiet and simple computer to write in public spaces (libraries, classes ...), look for product reviews talk fan and heat dissipation equipment. Small details like these help eliminate exceptions and focus on what really matters. What do you need?

Buy a good notebook is not the same as buying a good laptop for you. You have to consider exactly what you need before you start looking for options, otherwise you end up with a good team overall, but that is not suited to what you want. Before you start looking at statistics, reviews and models, make a list of what you need: what you use the laptop, how long you want to last, budget ... If you do that, besides watching all the above information and of course, try before you buy, it is very, very likely that you end up buying the best equipment on the market.

Is it advisable to remove the battery of my laptop or not and why?

Well I just buy a toshiba laptop satellite and was in the univ I using it connected to power and a friend told me q is not good q connect it to power and have the battery q is better to take it out and just use the current and another colleague he told me q what q is advisable to use only the battery and when x example there newly connect to power is at 10% and wanted to know q is q I do if I take out the battery and use it with running and when you turn it lose the information my laptop by not having put the battery ?? there risk? or is it just cuestiond and saving money or actually wastes your laptop
Answer: It is harmful to keep the battery connected to a charger if you have already completed the load?

DO NOT. Contrary to nickel-based batteries - whose prolonged stay in the charger can damage and even cause a fire - the Lithium-Ion batteries have a circuit that cuts off the power once the charging is completed. This is usually indicated by a light on the device.

Of course, there is always the possibility of a fault or overload in the transformer, so it should not be left connected to the mains permanently.

Is it harmful to the battery of a notebook that this work always connected to power?

Good thing I ask because not only is harmful, but a laptop is the most harmful stage on which a battery can operate due to two deadly factors: heat and stress.

Heat works by decreasing the resistance of the battery, so its ability to retain power will be decreasing. In fact a Lithium-Ion should never work at temperatures above 60 ° C (range approaching the 40 to 50 of some notebooks). In turn, keep the computer connected to the current being in use generates a "stress' constant, because the force to maintain a 100% charge.

The damage is such that a battery whose charge is maintained at 100% at 60, after three months will retain only 60% of its total capacity, reducing its life just 12 months.

What to do about it? If you occupy the notebook as a replacement for a desktop computer, it is best to remove the battery. But as to remove remains open compartment, it is not recommended if the room where you work is too exposed to moisture or dust.

In the case of my PDA or mobile phone, no matter the transformer load using the USB cable?
Palm reports to be preferred using the charger as always provides the correct amperage. The USB port on some computers - especially notebooks - not always maintain the required 500mA, so it will take up to three times to complete the load.

I will not use my device for a few months, how should I store the battery?

According to studies conducted by BatteryUniversity, all Lithium-Ion more resistant over time with 40% of its load. For example, a stored at room temperature with 40% charged battery will maintain 96% of its total capacity after one year; while a stored with 100% charge will retain only 80% in the same period.

It is for this reason that most devices factory bring a small initial charge: just 40%.
What is clear is that a Lithium-Ion NEVER be stored unloaded. It can cause an unrecoverable damage.

How to calibrate the battery of a laptop

When we put our laptop a new, recently purchased battery, it may be that the measurements performed by the computer on battery capacity may not be correct. This causes our laptop to consider, before time, the battery is running out and enter standby or turned off.

We must calibrate the battery or laptop, we need to tell your computer to verify the capacity of the new battery and not be guided by the old battery we have replaced.

With information from battery manufacturers and laptops we've made a guide that helps us solve this problem.

Calibrating the battery of a laptop:

Inside the battery there is a microprocessor software that calculates the battery volume during loading and unloading. Occasionally the battery has to be calibrated for the computer to recognize and display correctly on-screen time and freight volume. When using the battery for the first time it is advisable to apply a full cycle of loading and unloading. Proceed as follows:

  1.     With the computer off, connect the power charger to the computer and leave it charging at least 3 hours
  2.     Disconnect the computer power charger
  3.     Turn on your computer and go to "Setting Power Options": Start / Control Panel / Hardware and Sound / Power Options / Change when the computer sleeps suspension / In the column "On battery" and "with AC" select "Never" in the fields "Dimming the screen", "Turn off display" and "Put the computer to sleep state"
  4.     Let the computer turns off, because it has exhausted the battery charge.
  5.     When loaded again you can now access the configuration options that changed before and leave them in their previous state.
  6.     Then turn off the computer.
  7.     Connect the charger and let it charge until the charging light battery turns green, indicating that the load was completed. On some models the battery light turns white and other turns off when charging is complete.
  8.     Press the power button to start the computer.
  9.     Press F8 repeatedly when the logo of the brand of computer, before the start of windows appears.
  10.     When the Advanced Windows startup menu appears, use the up and down arrows to select Safe Mode and then press Enter
  11.     When the Advanced Startup Menu window appears, select the Startup in Safe Mode option
  12.     Disconnect the charger equipment.
  13.     Allow the battery to discharge completely until the computer turns off.

The battery I been calibrated and measurements should now be correct.
